I woke up this morning wishing I was back in Amsterdam.
As I rubbed my eyes in my queen bed in a small suburb in the middle of America, I thought of the sleepy cobblestone streets, dark and commanding architecture, and opposite of super-sized café lattes.
Discovering via random exploration is one of the best ways to experience a city.
I happened upon an old cathedral hosting a temporary exhibit called “The Museum of Broken Relationships,” a Medieval Torture Museum (this has an awesome back story I won't get into right now - you have to buy the book), and the most amazing gelato at Metropolitan.
All by trusting my intuition as a compass.
Staying a few nights in what resembled a hobbit house – reachable only by ladder – located in one of Amsterdam’s oldest buildings, I was incredibly content. After ambling around town for miles, my Jacuzzi tub overlooking Warmoesstraat was the perfect place to sit with my laptop and write until the streets quieted down.
Then it was time for a midnight adventure in the darkness.
No better place than the canals.
I plan to spend part of each year in Amsterdam
- my counterpart to NYC -
in more ways than one.
